Many of those who are trying to book cheap flights with their favorite airline company usually do not ask what types of planes are being used by the said company to save costs. This question of course borders to the technical and a question among the curious few who would like to know more why it is now so easy to get cheap flights whether one is talking about an international flight or a domestic one.
You get what you pay for they say and if one is talking about low cost airfare, it means you’d be flying with a budget carrier i.e. one with fewer comforts.
For these carriers to make up for lost revenue due to the low ticket prices, they usually charge for extras such as seat allocation, extra baggage, and food.
Most of the planes used for low cost flights include the Airbus A-320 and the Boeing 737-800. Some budget carriers however operate aircraft modeled for a single passenger class. While many would say that low cost carriers use old planes to fly people from one destination to the next at cheaper rates, this is no longer true. It is a fact however that in the past, low cost or budget airlines used to fly the likes of the McDonnell Douglas DC-9 or the older versions of the Boeing 737.
Since 2000 when fleets already consisted of smaller and more fuel-efficient planes i.e. the newer Boeing 737 and the Airbus A320, servicing, fuel, and training costs dropped dramatically that the change of aircraft alone has made it possible for carriers to offer cheap airfare to their customers.
As mentioned before, low cost carriers are usually modeled for a certain type of passenger and since these airlines operate under the lowest costs possible, only a minimum set of equipment are included inside their planes which translates to minimum comfort for the passenger. Often, these flights do not offer in-flight entertainment while others do not offer seating so as to encourage customers to board a flight early. The seating issue decreases the turnaround time for these carriers making it possible for them to fly more people from one destination to the next.
When booking a flight, you can always opt to look for cheap flights online or with a booking agent and compare costs. Cheap flights in a certain airline could still be relatively higher compared to the same flights with another carrier.
