Key West: The Mainland's Tropical Paradise

Is there anywhere in the world quite like Key West? The southernmost point of the continental United States is a tropical paradise to behold for many of it's residents and tourists alike. The beaches, the salty ocean air, the history and the diversity that contributes to Key West culture make it a unique place indeed.

What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Key West. There are a few answers that seem to be common among most people. depending upon their point of view. There is, of course, the sand and the sea. Key West seems to conjure up images of a relaxed. breezy life full of sunny days and warm nights. Others think of the Key Lime (which was brought to the Keys from the West Indies by Spanish explorers, coincidentally) and the delicious pies that can be made from them.

Key West has had some interesting industries that were all it's own, including the salvaging of retrieved artifacts from wrecked ships centuries ago (though this is not commonly done today) and collection of sea salt for use in various products including Key Lime Salt Scrubs. The salt scrub is still manufactured today and is popular among both the locals and the tourists, who often purchase it as a souvenir. For the tourist, it is a way to enjoy the smells and feeling of Key West when they are back at home, until they can make their way back to the island for their next getaway.
